    Scarecrows & Decorated Gardens

This year we have added a new element to this competition, so if you don't want to make a scarecrow then decorate your front garden, fence, gate or porch instead, as long as it can be seen from the road. Alternatively you could do both.

Make sure your wonderful scarecrows and gardens are ready for the judging which will take place during Carnival week. Entry forms are available at Winkworth / Hairsway or online at Entry Form

Don't forget to download the location map as well and leave your entry form, map and £2 entry fee in the box at the Winkworth / Hairsway.

Register your scarecrow by 5.00 Thursday 27 June to get on the map.

For those wanting a map of where to find the scarecrows and / or a judging form, these will be available from the Winkworth / Hairsway £1 from 29th June.

Winner to be announced at the Boule Event.

    Sway Carnival Yarn Bomb

UNDER the SEA – Yarn Bombing Event

As part of this year’s Carnival week (28th June – 7th July 2019), the Carnival Committee, Sway WI and Sway Knit & Natter are planning to bring colour to the village centre with a yarn bombing event.

The plan is to sew squares of knitting or crochet into wraps for trees, fences, gates, post etc.

In addition, knitted, crocheted or fabric figures that are representative of the theme ‘Under the Sea’ will also be used as hanging decorations and some form of bunting.

Our request to our lovely Sway residents – please get your knitting needles, crochet hooks, spare balls of wool and fabric out and help us make the village centre look colourful for Carnival Week.

Collection bins will be located in Winkworths and the Silver Hind and all items need to be donated by 15th June.

There are some rules to follow, but these are to help with a follow-on project where the knitting will be donated to the Christina Noble Children’s Foundation as blankets for Mongolia.

    • Use colour related to the sea eg: blues, greens, greys, yellows, oranges, pinks. etc
    • Knit and crochet 15cm / 6 inch squares.
    • Knitted, crocheted or fabric sea creatures, fish, shells, plants, octopus, submarines etc.
    • For knitted items - double knit wool in Garter Stitch or Moss Stitch would be preferable.
    • Squares need to have wool tails of around 25cm / 10 inches at the beginning and end to aid sewing up.
    • Squares can be plain, patterned or include motifs related to the theme of Under the Sea
    • If volunteers would like to make more than one square, please stitch the squares together to form strips up to four squares long.

A 6 inch knitted square = Size 4mm or UK size 8 needles. Cast on 30 stitches and knit every row until 6 inches has been knitted

Please help out and make this a real community event.

Many thanks, Sway Fete & Carnival, Sway WI, & Sway Knit & Natter.
